Great to see Portland, Oregon at number 2. Plus Hood River is an hour away for even more fun.
And don't forget Syncline! Funny, I bet Portland has the highest death rate on a bicycle than any other city. That's a fact they don't mention. Last month, 3 cyclists. Be careful out there......2 were cyclists trying to beat lights or changing lanes super fast.
Portland does have the highest death rate out of all the named cities. Willamette Weekly did a huge story on it just last week. I assume that's due to all the construction downtown plus the sheer population the rides. With increased riders come increased deaths. I used to ride downtown Portland all the time, it's not too bad. The key is riding with your head on a swivel, be careful commuters!
Wheres North Shore, BC on that list????
as to why b.c. isint on the list we dont no, but before i even looked at the list i assumed nelson would be number 1. but now that i think about it,this has nothing to do with mountainbiking, its about rd cycling and path trails i asume?
Shows tht canada isnt the best after all. haha
Where was the U.K contribution to top 11 riding cities or even mountain biking meccas? Just curious
dang i wish santa barbara CA was more chill about biking. all the dumb hikers get mad an they are trying to ban us form the santa barbara Foothills
no citys from bc thats suprizing
I know. What about the classic shore style? But the thing is is that the vancouver parks and rec are all anoyed at the bikers 'cause we are "causing ecological damage" That is probably why vancouver or any bc town is on the list.
Wow im really suprised too see that there are no cities from BC also i would think that Christina Lake would be on there but....nope.
Nowhere in Canada really has the population to support the type of riding infrastructure this list is discussing. We certainly have it locked down for the mountains though
What makes you guys think BC has bike-friendly cities, mountain biking is not equal to commuting, kids.
Its because the list was more town/city/path oriented not mountain or north shore type stuff. Amsterdam was #1, no one fricken mountain bikes there, they all have like 10-20 year old bikes (for the most part)
Also, not surprising how all of these cities are some of the most liberal places in the world.
kind of suprised that victoria isn't there, they're pretty bike commuter friendly
That's rad to see Portland up at #2. There is a whole lot that the city does for it's bike riders, but building trail isn't one of them.
#2. Ehh . I think we can do better. And I think that having some decent mountain bike trails would do just that. Thatway everyone is happy. Ohh, and educate new drivers on bike safty so they don't hit you for riding in the street. That sucks. If that got done, we'd be #1.
How about " Top 11 bicycle UNfriendly cities in the World" ?
Woohoo Amsterdam rocks!
suprise suprise no UK in that list, just recently they knocked down the local bmx track in the public park now ive got no were to go dirt jumping that i can just cycle too.
theres something wrong there.....WHAT ABOUT WHISTLER?!?!
have you not read the past like 10 comments... it might explain this
That list disapoints me.
HEY MORONS!!! These are most bike friendly CITIES...not mountains. This is about commuting, not trail-riding. At some point you may need a job and it will probably be in a city. Then, this list will make more sense to you.
NYC is pathetic compared to those cities... with all the public transportation we have in NYC, there are triple the amount of vehicles, and they have no respect for the bike lanes.... AND, if you get caught riding on the sidewalk the police officers will give you a summons for it. So it's either get hit by a car or get a summons for riding! I'll walk!
Here are NYC bike lanes...

Hope this doesnt stop you from commuting. Its real simple, citys everywhere struggle for the same thing... S-P-A-C-E! and if youre gonna ride you better be ok with this because it will never change so bone up on your skillz, wear a lid because theyre bad ass, make sure your ride is dialed and use lights with a nice bright colored pack or jacket or shirt. Ive ridden to and from work for the past 20 yrs, never been hit even with a few close calls. This is simply because I have no illusions about te risks and reality of my abilities to handle two wheels. MOve with traffic, not against it, be curtious and be seen. Now go ride and save your self. peace
I know how it feels to drag a DH bike on road.... I did that on 10 days long AM event... i was dead while riding my bike on climbs.
damn, Canada needs to get on that map!
Boulder colorado YEAA... so fun to go biking there.. dissapointed to see no Canadian towns.
WHAT! vancouver should be seccond we invented FR
Kelowna BC is trying very hard to be known for not only its endless, amazing mountain biking but also for its hundreds of kilometers of bike lanes, paths and routes. I mountain bike, and have for almost twenty years now, but also manage cycling and transit infrastructure for Kelowna. All of our good ideas are 'borrowed' from European cities that are way ahead of us when it comes to providing for transportation and recreational cyclists. Yes, BC is heaven when it comes to mountain biking, but until we start treating everyday cyclists as if they where just as important as those rednecks driving their lifted, polished peice of shit diesel trucks then we will never make a list like this.
where is canada, have they forgotten about the mountain bike capital of the world?
Are you all idiots? Can you not understand the difference between a good place to mountain bike and a good city to commute by bike? It sounds like a bunch of four year olds whining in here, this isn't a hard concept to understand.
... I'm a proud Canadian mountain biker but I have to agree with Canada not being on that list... unfortunately commuting is very dangerous in Canada (in general it seems like the bigger the city the more dangerous it is to bike there). Drivers are not educated and many think bikes shouldn't be on the road and have no concern for the safety of riders. I tried commuting to work last summer but after having several scares with cars I decided the risk of getting hit by an idiot was not worth the benefits and ended up taking the bus...
Canada is respected world-wide for it's mountain biking but it is nowhere near good enough to be considered a leading country as far as supporting using bicycles on the road (as a mode of transportatio or as a leisure activity). The only exception I have seen to this is Waterloo which is a city where cyclists tend to get more respect and even separate bike lanes on several roads. I assume this is because there are two large universities in this city and students' main transportation is often bicycles.
... sad as it is, I don't think Canada deserves to be on that list although it should definately learn from what other countries are doing and improve it's system so that it is more compatible with bikes!

I am embarrased at the number of ignorant canadians posting here.
1) this is a rating of "bike friendly cities" - meaning for transportation / commuting purposes, as has been repeated and ignored several times. This is about riding to work, school, or the grocery store.. not busting no-handed road gaps.
2) For those Canadians able to grasp this, but still feel the rating is unfair, there is a small factor working against almost all canadian cities for bicycle commuting... what's it called again?.. oh yeah.. WINTER.

check this link of Amsterdam. This is the bike parking area outside the train station. This is why Amsterdam is number one on the list.

I think this list is a bit off, and may be a political choice in this case. Boulder is not a bike friendly city. There might be a bunch of bike lanes but they are not used. Everyone there drives to work, including all the out of town commuters pack the city during rush hour. And there are way too many trail conflicts to say the place is friendly. There is good XC in the areas around Boulder, and a large bike community. But this is not enough for it to be a top ten.
What about Bourge, Belgium...they have a lot of bikes roaming around there plus they're all super nice people!
My guess is that it has less to do with the amount of bikes and the personalities of the people. The cities are rated for their efforts and how much of their transportation budgets they devote specifically to bikes. I would think Bend Oregon would be another city on list but they spend a lot on building roads because of the population growth. I would suspect that the list was a reader/user survey, perhaps send recommendations to Virgin Vacations (the company that did it) with additional cities for them to check out. Tell them why it should make the list next year. Everyone commenting here won't help much. In fact, if you really want your town on the list, take it to your local government and suggest the tourism, ecological and congestion benefits to them, ask them to step up to the plate. Just my two cents.
yeah I agree ranting on pinkbike won't help, although I doubt talking to the local government will do much either...
O I beg to differ. I talked to mine a while back now. They are working on a bike park, new DH trails, a new XC loop and bike paths to help keep the bikes off the road. I was really surprised. The key is to come across professional. Have carefully thought out arguments, do lots of research.
Just don't give up. Keep pushing, get other people involved with you, they will sooner or later have to notice you.
no surprise sydneys not on there, all the council does is wreck our jumps and refuse to build any themselves
were da f### is the north shore???!!!

Top 11 bicycle UNfriendly cities in the World" ? I'd like to nominate Burlington ON. (or anywhere on the golden horseshoe for that matter)
